They are using the English language correctly.

The singular they has been in use in English for about 600-700 years and is a normal thing people learn in school and has been for at least a hundred years.

There isn’t an equivalent word you can use in its place if you don’t know the gender of a person or where it is not relevant to mention or does not apply (including when referring to an animal, robot, alien, fantasy creature, etc.).
