I'm not having a go at the author here - I actually really appreciate the writeup! - but this is terrible UX from Jira that doesn't put customers first and does not address user needs.

Having both used *and written* many bug tracking tools over the last 30 years, and really deep dived into workflows (I started a company just focused on issue tracking tooling), I'm not prepared to indulge the idea that Atlassian have actually thought this through and that it's really an intentional design choice that improves how people track issues, rather than a weird constraint.

Dressing it it up as a "feature" feels disingenuous, to me it seems like one many odd design decisions and limitations in a poorly performing product with an awkward UX that has had major defects in text editing interface that have been around for over a decade now; Jira comes across as a product Atlassian are really struggling with.
